Sydney Mines Heritage Museum

The Sydney Mines Heritage Museum and the Cape Breton Fossil Centre share a site at 159 Legatto Street in the town of Sydney Mines, on the north side of Sydney Harbour in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, about a quarter of an hour by road from the city of Sydney. Sydney Mines grew up around coal, and the two attractions together tell the story of the rocks that held the coal and the people who dug it out. A single ticket gives access to both parts of the site.

The Cape Breton Fossil Centre is devoted to the ancient life of the region. Cape Breton holds some of the richest fossil beds in eastern North America, laid down in the Carboniferous period, around three hundred million years ago, when the area was a warm, swampy lowland covered in giant ferns and tree-like plants. The coal seams beneath the coast are the remains of those forests, and the rock above them is full of fossil plants, footprints and other traces. The centre displays hundreds of specimens, including fossil trees and leaves, and it has hands-on labs where visitors can handle fossils and learn how scientists study them. An exhibit called Age of the Mastodon turns to a far more recent time, with a life-sized reconstruction of one of the large ice-age mammals and the fossil evidence that such animals once lived in the region.

The Sydney Mines Heritage Museum is housed in a historic railway station built in 1905, and it tells the human side of the story. The coal industry on this coast reaches back to the eighteenth century, and Sydney Mines was one of the main mining towns, with shafts that ran far out under the sea. The museum shows the tools, lamps, clothing and photographs of miners, and it explains how families lived in a company town, how the work was done and how dangerous it could be. Railway history is part of the picture as well, since the old station was a hub for moving coal to the harbour and passengers to other towns.

The setting is pleasant and easy to combine with a drive along the harbour. Parking is available on site, and the building is a short distance from the town centre and the waterfront. Families with children often enjoy the fossil labs most, and adults interested in mining and railway heritage will find plenty to read. A visit takes about two hours.

Opening days and hours change with the season, and the site is generally open every day in summer with shorter hours outside it, so check before going. Admission has concessions for students, youth and seniors. The site suits families, geology fans and anyone interested in the industrial heritage of Cape Breton.
