History

The history of Niagara Falls is rooted in its strategic location and natural grandeur. The area was originally inhabited by Indigenous peoples, including the Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) and Neutral nations, with Huron-Wendat trading networks also reaching the area, who recognized the spiritual and practical significance of the falls. The name "Niagara" is often traced to an Iroquoian word, sometimes rendered Oni:ara, meaning "thunder of the water." In the 17th and 18th centuries, the region became a focal point for French and British colonial interests, notably during the French and Indian War, and the nearby fort sites helped control the portage around the falls. The area's strategic importance continued through the War of 1812, when the Niagara River served as a border and the site of several significant battles, including Lundy's Lane. Later, the area was a destination on the Underground Railroad, as freedom seekers crossed the river into Canada. Today, the region honors this complex history, blending its military past with its role as a major tourist destination.

Main Attractions

The primary attraction is the Horseshoe Falls, the largest of the three waterfalls that make up Niagara Falls, along with the American Falls and the smaller Bridal Veil Falls. Millions of litres of water pour over the crest every minute, creating a mist that can be seen from miles away. Journey Behind the Falls allows visitors to descend through tunnels carved into the bedrock to portals beside the falling water, offering a different perspective on the power of the river. The Niagara SkyWheel provides panoramic views of the falls and the surrounding landscape, and the Skylon Tower offers a higher viewpoint. Clifton Hill is the loud and colourful side of Niagara Falls, with arcades, wax museums, and family attractions, while the Fallsview district is known for its hotels and the Niagara Fallsview Casino Resort.

The most convenient way to reach Niagara Falls is by car, with the Queen Elizabeth Way (QEW) providing direct access from Toronto, approximately 130 kilometers away. The drive takes approximately 1.5 hours, longer in summer traffic. For those arriving by air, Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ) is the closest major airport, located approximately 130 kilometers from the falls. Public transportation options include the WEGO bus system, which connects major hotels and attractions in the Niagara region, and there is also seasonal GO train service from Toronto.

Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit Niagara Falls is from May to October, when the weather is warm and pleasant. The summer months, particularly July and August, are the most popular, with long daylight hours and warm temperatures. However, these months also see the highest number of visitors. For a less crowded experience, the shoulder seasons of spring (May) and fall (September) are ideal, offering mild weather and fewer crowds. The winter months, while cold, offer a unique experience with the possibility of ice formations on the falls, though some attractions may have limited hours.
