Ingonish Beach

Ingonish Beach, located within Cape Breton Highlands National Park, offers a unique natural phenomenon where visitors can swim in both the cold Atlantic Ocean and warm freshwater from Freshwater Lake. Separated by a natural cobble barrier known as a barachois, this rare feature allows swimmers to cross rounded stones to rinse off in the exceptionally warm lake water, influenced by the Gulf Stream. The beach features a mix of sand and smooth cobbles, with facilities including a full bathhouse with toilets, showers, and change rooms.

Lifeguards are present on the ocean side during July and August, ensuring safety for swimmers. The site is accessible via a boardwalk to an overlook, and beach wheelchairs can be reserved for those with mobility needs. A 1.7-kilometer trail loops around Freshwater Lake, much of which is wheelchair-friendly with handrails. The beach is closed in winter, and the bathhouse typically opens in late June.

Visitors should note that a Parks Canada day pass is required for entry, available at entry booths or visitor centers. The best time to visit is mid-afternoon for the warmest lake water or late August and early September when crowds are thinner. Sunrise views are particularly striking from the south end. Adjacent attractions include the Freshwater Lake Look-Off and the Middle Head Trail for cliff-top walks. The beach is situated at the foot of Cape Smokey along the Cabot Trail, making it a convenient stop for travelers exploring the region. It is recommended to check for any active road closures on the island before traveling.
