Niagara Parks Butterfly Conservatory

The Niagara Parks Butterfly Conservatory is a heated glass conservatory in Niagara Falls, Ontario. Located at 2565 Niagara Parkway, it lies about nine kilometres downstream from the falls. It sits on the grounds of the Niagara Parks School of Horticulture and the adjoining botanical gardens, and it is run by the Niagara Parks Commission. Inside, a warm, humid tropical garden holds free-flying butterflies from many parts of the world, and walking among them is a very different experience from the thunder of the falls up the river.

The conservatory houses well over a thousand butterflies at a time, representing dozens of species from Central and South America, Africa and Asia. A winding path of roughly 180 metres leads through a landscape of tropical plants, flowering shrubs, ponds and a small waterfall. Temperatures are kept high, so the air is warm and humid even in the middle of winter, and visitors often shed a jacket as soon as they walk in. The butterflies are everywhere: resting on leaves, feeding on fruit or flower nectar, flitting over the path, and sometimes landing on a shoulder or hand.

Butterfly colours range from deep blues and iridescent greens to bold orange and yellow, and many have large wings with striking patterns, including eyespots that mimic larger animals. A highlight for many people is the emergence area, a glass case where chrysalises hang and new butterflies break out and dry their wings, so you can watch the life cycle in action. A short film in the conservatory’s theatre and displays on butterfly biology and conservation add context.

To get the best from the visit, wear bright colours, stand still and let the butterflies come to you, as they are attracted to colour and sometimes settle on clothing. Visitors should be careful where they step, since butterflies can land on the path, and the exit includes a mirror check to make sure none are carried out accidentally. Photography is welcome, but flash can disturb the butterflies, so turn it off.

The conservatory is open throughout the year, and tickets are sold on site and online. It is a pleasant option on a wet or cold day, and it suits families, couples and nature lovers. The visit takes about an hour, and it combines well with the Botanical Gardens next door and with a drive along the Niagara Parkway. Admission is separate from other Niagara Parks attractions, so check what is included before you buy.
