Niagara Falls History Museum

A short distance from the roar of the falls and the neon of Clifton Hill, the Niagara Falls History Museum tells a quieter story. It stands at 5810 Ferry Street, near Lundy’s Lane, the road where in July 1814 British and Canadian forces fought American troops in the Battle of Lundy's Lane, one of the bloodiest engagements of the War of 1812. The museum traces its roots to the Lundy's Lane Historical Society, founded in the late 19th century, which established a museum in 1907, making this one of the older community museums in Ontario. It is run by the city and is notable for focusing on the human history of the area rather than the scenery alone.

Exhibits cover the long span of local history. Indigenous communities lived along the Niagara River long before European settlement, and the museum describes their presence and the place of the falls in their traditions. Later galleries follow early settlers, Loyalists and farmers, the War of 1812 and the aftermath of the fighting, and the industrial era when the falls powered mills and factories. The Niagara Falls story includes some colourful characters, and the museum covers the daredevils who tried to cross or descend the falls, from Blondin's tightrope walk in 1859 to Annie Edson Taylor, the schoolteacher who went over in a barrel in 1901 and survived.

Photography is another theme. Because the falls have been one of the most photographed places on earth since the early days of the camera, the museum has explored how images shaped the way people see them, and how souvenirs and postcards turned the cataract into a tourist icon. Hands-on elements let visitors handle reproductions, try on items and look closely at objects from the War of 1812 era, such as uniforms and muskets, making it a good option for children.

Nearby, Drummond Hill Cemetery, where many of the soldiers from the 1814 battle are remembered, and the Lundy's Lane battlefield area provide a short historical walk. Allow an hour or two for the museum.
