Niagara Parks Botanical Gardens

Away from the crowds at the brink of the falls, the Niagara Parkway runs north through orchards, parkland and quiet river views to a garden that few first-time visitors discover. The Niagara Parks Botanical Gardens cover about 99 acres, roughly ten minutes by car downstream from Niagara Falls, and they have long served as the horticultural centre of the Niagara Parks Commission. The grounds are also home to the Niagara Parks School of Horticulture, where students have trained in the gardening arts since the 1930s, and the beds, borders and specimen trees that fill the property are partly the product of their work.

The layout is a sequence of themed gardens that flow into one another along wide paths and lawns. The Rose Garden is a highlight, with thousands of roses flowering from early summer, and perennial and herb gardens add colour and scent, while a long arboretum of mature trees gives shade. The Pollinator Playground, a newer feature, uses interactive elements and plantings to teach younger visitors about bees, butterflies and the plants that feed them. A children's garden gives families another reason to linger. Seasonal displays change through the year, with tulips and spring bulbs giving way to summer annuals and autumn colour, and the gardens are open throughout the year so there is always something to see.

The Butterfly Conservatory is on the same grounds and is often the main reason families come. Inside a tropical glasshouse, hundreds of butterflies of dozens of species fly freely among flowering plants, landing on shoulders and hands. The warm humid air is a welcome contrast on a winter day, and the displays include information about the butterfly life cycle and the importance of pollinators. The conservatory is covered in its own listing, but a visit to the gardens naturally includes it.

The gardens are easy to reach on the Niagara Parkway, which is also a scenic route for cyclists, and parking is available on site. Walking paths wind between beds, and quiet corners are easy to find even on busy summer weekends. Visitors can combine the gardens with a drive along the Niagara River toward Niagara-on-the-Lake, stopping at the small parks and vineyards on the way.
