The Underground City, known locally as the RÉSO, is a vast network of interconnected indoor spaces in downtown Montreal. Spanning approximately 32 kilometers, this pedestrian network links metro stations, shopping centers, office towers, hotels, and cultural venues. Developed starting in the 1960s, the system was designed to provide climate-controlled connectivity during Montreal’s harsh winters, allowing residents and visitors to navigate the city without exposure to extreme weather.

The network features over 1,600 stores and 200 restaurants, creating a vibrant indoor environment. Key hubs include the Complexe Desjardins, Centre Eaton, and the Fairmont Queen Elizabeth Hotel. The RÉSO is fully integrated with the Montreal Metro system, allowing seamless travel between transit hubs and commercial areas.
