The Lunenburg Academy stands on a hilltop above the old town of Lunenburg, Nova Scotia, at 97 Kaulbach Street, and is known locally as the Castle on the Hill. Its towers and tall roofline are visible from much of the town and from the harbour below, and it is one of the best-known buildings in a community that is itself a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Built in the mid-1890s as a school, the academy served that purpose for well over a century.
The building is a large wooden structure in the Second Empire style, a design popular in the Victorian era, with a mansard-type roof, a central tower, dormers and a cupola. Wood is not the usual material for a building of this scale, and the Academy is one of the larger surviving timber schools of its period in Canada. Its tall windows and many gables give it a castle-like silhouette, which explains the local nickname. Inside, wide staircases, high ceilings and long corridors recall the days when generations of town children filled the classrooms.
Today the building has found new life as a cultural and community space. The museum side focuses on the history of education and of the building itself, and an interpretive classroom shows how a nineteenth- and early twentieth-century school looked and worked, with period desks and teaching materials. Visitors can wander through the halls, read about the families who studied here and see how the building has been cared for over time. Exhibitions and art displays are held in parts of the building, and performances and events use the larger rooms, so the schedule changes through the year.
The setting adds to a visit. The Academy looks over the town’s colourful roofs and the harbour, and the walk up from the waterfront gives a feel for how steeply Lunenburg is built. The grounds are open, and many people stop here for photographs. The Lunenburg Waterfront and Old Town, the Fisheries Museum of the Atlantic and the Lunenburg Maritime Heritage Centre are all within walking distance, so the Academy works well as a stop on a longer circuit of the town.
It suits anyone interested in architecture, schools and local history, as well as families who want an indoor stop on a rainy day. Opening times and admission arrangements are seasonal, so it is sensible to confirm them before you go. Wear comfortable shoes for the hill, and allow an hour or so to see the interior and enjoy the views.
