James Street North

James Street North is the main street of Hamilton’s arts district, a stretch of the old downtown that runs north from King Street toward the harbour and the rail yards. A generation ago the street was run-down, with empty storefronts and few visitors. Low rents attracted artists, small galleries, studios and cafes, and since the early 2000s the street has been gradually revived, largely from the ground up, by creative people and small business owners. It now has a lively, independent feel that sets it apart from the larger commercial streets of the city.

The street is lined with nineteenth-century brick buildings, many with their original cornices and tall windows, and the mix of old structures and new uses is part of the charm. Independent galleries show work by local and regional artists, and artist-run centres such as Hamilton Artists Inc. present contemporary exhibitions and performances. Between them are cafes, bakeries, bars, record and vintage shops, restaurants serving food from many parts of the world, and boutiques selling clothing, books and design. Public art appears on walls and in small plazas, and the sidewalks are wide enough for browsing at an easy pace.

The best-known events are the monthly Art Crawl, held on the second Friday evening of each month, when galleries stay open late and the street fills with people, and Supercrawl, a large street festival held in September that fills several blocks with music, art installations, food and crowds. These events show how thoroughly the street has become a cultural heart for the city. Outside event times, the street is quieter, and weekday mornings and afternoons are the best moments for wandering at leisure.

The area also has a visitor information presence that offers maps and advice about the rest of the city, which helps newcomers connect with Hamilton’s attractions and history. Visitors will find the street easy to reach from the downtown, with buses and the nearby GO station making transit simple, and parking is available on side streets and lots. From here, it is a short walk or ride to Gore Park, the Art Gallery of Hamilton and the farmers’ market, so James Street North pairs well with a wider downtown visit.

The street suits those interested in contemporary art, independent shopping and local food, and it is a favourite of photographers because of the old architecture and murals. Allow two hours to stroll and stop in galleries, and plan for a Friday evening if you want the Art Crawl. Opening hours vary by business, and many galleries are closed on Mondays.
