Gage Park

On warm weekends in Hamilton, Gage Park fills with families, picnickers and photographers, and the reason is easy to see. The park is the city's main formal green space, a landscaped garden and recreation ground on the east side of downtown that has been a local favourite for well over a century. It lies at the corner of Main Street East and Gage Avenue, at 1000 Main Street East, easy to reach by bus or car, and it is free to enter. The park takes its name from the Gage family, who gave the original land to the city in the early 1900s.

The park is laid out as a sequence of garden spaces and open lawns on a gently sloping site. Floral displays are the main visual feature, with large formal beds planted with annuals that change colour through the season, and pathways run between lawns and mature trees. A historic fountain forms a focal point, and a bandshell hosts summer concerts and community events. Hamilton has long used the park for festivals, with crowds sitting on the grass to listen to music or watch a performance on warm evenings.

A tropical greenhouse is among the best-loved attractions. Its glass-walled rooms are filled with palms, ferns and flowering plants, which makes it a welcome retreat in winter when the rest of the park is bare. The Hamilton Children's Museum is also located in the park, and playgrounds, a splash pad and open grass add to its appeal for families. Walkers and runners use the paved paths for exercise, and in winter an outdoor skating rink opens when the weather allows.

Visitors who want to extend the outing can visit nearby sights such as the Art Gallery of Hamilton, the farmers' market downtown and the Royal Botanical Gardens. The Niagara Escarpment, which Hamilton residents call the mountain, rises just to the south and offers more green space and views.

The park has been the subject of improvement plans in recent years, so some areas may be fenced off for work and facilities may change.
