Hot Springs Cove is a remote geothermal oasis in Maquinna Marine Provincial Park, on the coast of Clayoquot Sound some 35 kilometres northwest of Tofino. Accessible only by boat or floatplane due to the lack of road connections, this secluded destination offers a unique escape into the old-growth rainforest of Clayoquot Sound. From the dock, a boardwalk of about two kilometres leads through the rainforest to the springs, where hot water tumbles down a small waterfall into a series of natural rock pools at the edge of the sea; at high tide, cold ocean waves wash into the lowest pools.
The area holds significant historical and cultural context. It lies within the traditional territory of the Hesquiaht First Nation. In 1933, Ivan Clarke established a trading post here, which eventually grew into a small community with a general store, fish-buying camp, and post office. In 1955, Clarke donated 31 acres of land beside the springs to the people of British Columbia, forming the basis of what is now Maquinna Marine Provincial Park.
Visitors typically reach the cove via licensed tour operators. Boat tours take over an hour each way and often include wildlife spotting opportunities, while floatplane trips reduce travel time to about 20 minutes. The experience emphasizes respect for the land and its stewards, providing a peaceful environment where time seems to slow down. Access to the park has been restricted at times, so check with BC Parks and Tofino tour operators before planning a trip. Bring water shoes for the slippery rocks, and leave soap and alcohol behind.
