FirstOntario Concert Hall

The FirstOntario Concert Hall is Hamilton’s main venue for orchestral music, theatre and touring shows, and it stands in the downtown on Summers Lane, close to the FirstOntario Centre arena, the convention centre and the shops of King Street. It opened in 1973 under the name Hamilton Place, and the present name came later with a corporate sponsorship. The hall has been a mainstay of the city’s cultural life for more than fifty years, and it is a place where generations of Hamiltonians have seen their first concerts, ballets and musicals.

The building has two performance spaces. The Great Hall is the main auditorium, a large traditional hall of about two thousand two hundred seats, arranged in a stalls level and balconies with clear sightlines. The Studio is a smaller room used for chamber music, recitals, comedy and theatre, where the audience sits close to the performers. The hall is the home of the Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra, which performs a season of classical and popular programs, often with guest soloists. Other events include opera, ballet, children’s shows, touring musicals, comedy, pop and rock concerts and holiday productions. The programme changes through the year, and the venue’s schedule shows a mix of major touring acts and local community performances. The hall is operated by a management company that runs the daily operations and bookings for the venue and the neighbouring arena.

Visitors will find the hall easy to reach. It is a short walk from the main downtown streets and from the Hamilton GO Centre, and parking is available in nearby garages, though it can fill up on busy nights. Accessible seating and washrooms are provided, and there are bars and lobby spaces where people gather before shows and at intermission.
