Carp Heritage Trail

Carp is a village on the western edge of Ottawa that has kept its small-town character even though the city grew around it. It lies along the Carp River, in a gently rolling landscape of farms and woodland, and for many years it was the main centre of the former township of West Carleton before the municipal amalgamation of 2001 made it part of Ottawa. The Carp Heritage Trail, also known as the Carp Heritage Walk, is a self-guided route that introduces visitors to the village's story at their own pace.

The walk is built as a series of stops, and it can be followed with a smartphone app or a downloadable PDF guide, so there is no need to book or pay. Audio narration and short written notes explain each site, and the route takes in the old village core with its main street, historic buildings and the agricultural heritage that shaped it. The walk also reaches out to the natural setting, with the nearby Carp Hills offering rock outcrops that belong to the ancient Canadian Shield, among the oldest rock on earth, and the Carp River Valley supporting wetlands, forest and wildlife. Each section shows something different, from the built history to the geology and ecology.

Heritage walks of this kind are useful for seeing small details that a driver would miss: the shape of a 19th-century storefront, a former mill site, a church with a long record of weddings and funerals, the signs of old railway and road routes. The terrain is mostly moderate, though some sections, particularly in the Carp Hills, are uneven and require care, so sturdy footwear is advisable. Mobility is easier in the village core.

The village offers other attractions that fit a visit. The Diefenbunker, Canada's Cold War Museum, is a vast underground bunker built in 1961 to shelter government leaders in the event of nuclear war, and it is now a museum with guided tours. The Carp Farmers' Market, a long-running Saturday market, draws shoppers from across the region, and local cafés and shops serve lunch. Pairing the walk with these makes a good half-day trip from the city, by car or a longer bike ride.
