Rideau Hall

Two centuries of Canada’s history are folded into one stone house on a hill above the Ottawa River. Rideau Hall has been the official residence and workplace of the Governor General of Canada since Confederation in 1867, and it stands at 1 Sussex Drive, a few kilometres from Parliament Hill. The core of the building began as a private villa built in the late 1830s by Thomas McKay, a Scottish stonemason who had worked on the Rideau Canal and made his fortune in Bytown. The Crown rented the house in 1865 and bought it in 1868, and the governors general have since added ballrooms, wings and reception rooms, so the residence is now a patchwork of different decades.

Today the Governor General lives and works here, and the house is used for state ceremonies, investitures, the swearing-in of cabinets and receptions for foreign dignitaries. Visitors will find the grounds, in contrast, are generally open to the public and free to wander. They cover some 79 acres and include landscaped gardens, wide lawns, mature trees and quiet paths. The Tent Room, the Rose Garden and a set of sculptures form further highlights, and the vegetable and cutting gardens are managed with an eye on sustainability. In winter, an outdoor skating rink is sometimes set up on the grounds, and in spring the tulip beds flower in time for the city's tulip festival.

The Visitor Centre explains the history of the residence and the role of the Governor General, with exhibits that suit older children as well as adults, and activities for younger visitors are often offered. Grounds are closed or restricted around major events, and the schedule can change at short notice, so it is wise to check opening times before leaving.
