Art Gallery of Hamilton

The Art Gallery of Hamilton, usually called the AGH, is the main public art museum of Hamilton, Ontario, and one of the largest in the southwestern part of the province. It stands at 123 King Street West, in the middle of downtown, close to Jackson Square, the convention centre and the main streets of the city. The gallery was founded in the early twentieth century, in the same period as many of the country’s regional galleries, and it has grown into an institution with thousands of works. The land on which it stands lies within the Treaty Lands and territory of the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, and the gallery acknowledges that history.

The collection is strongest in Canadian art. Paintings and works on paper from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries show how artists responded to the landscape, to industry and to city life, and the galleries include pieces by well-known painters and by regional artists. The collection also includes European art, with prints, drawings and paintings, as well as contemporary works that reflect the diversity of present-day Canada, including Indigenous artists. Hamilton’s own story, as a steel city that has reinvented itself as a centre for arts and health sciences, runs through some of the displays and community projects.

Current temporary exhibitions are a major part of the programme and change several times a year. They include touring shows, thematic displays drawn from the permanent collection and projects by contemporary artists, many of them from Hamilton and the surrounding region. The gallery also runs public tours, family drop-in programs, workshops and talks, and these give the visit a social side beyond looking at the walls. Evenings, when the gallery stays open late on certain days, are a popular time for visitors who work during the day.

The building has been renovated and extended over the years, and it now has a bright entrance on King Street West and a layout that makes the galleries easy to follow. Accessible entrances, lifts and rest areas are provided, and underground parking is available nearby. Cafes, restaurants and shops are within a short walk, so the gallery fits easily into a day downtown, together with the farmers’ market and the library on York Boulevard.

Visitors should note that opening days, hours and admission charges change, and some exhibitions have their own arrangements, so check the AGH website before you go. The gallery is closed on some weekdays and on statutory holidays, and there are concessions for various groups. It suits art lovers, families, students and anyone curious about Canadian painting.
