The Old Town Hall

The Port Hope Town Hall, located at 56 Queen Street, is a prominent heritage building in the heart of Port Hope, Ontario. Constructed between 1851 and 1853 and rebuilt in 1893, the structure is a two-storey red brick building featuring Neo-Classic architecture with Greek Revival and Italianate details. A notable feature is the tall octagonal cupola topped with a clock and bell, which serves as a visual landmark for the town.

The building is officially recognized as a heritage site, listed on the Canadian Register in 2008 and protected by local by-law since 1994. Historically, it served as the focal point for political, social, and commercial activities in Port Hope. It housed council chambers, courtrooms, and a market square, and hosted social events and musical entertainment until the Music Hall was built in 1871. Today, it continues to function as the administrative center for the municipality, housing the Mayor’s office, council chambers, and finance departments.

While the building is primarily an active government office with operational hours from 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM, Monday to Friday, its exterior is accessible to the public.
