East Beach

East Beach is a small sandy beach on Lake Ontario in Port Hope, Ontario, close to the harbour and within easy walking distance of the historic downtown. It lies at the foot of Mill Street South, near the corner with Madison Street, and it is one of two public beaches in the town, the other being West Beach on the opposite side of the harbour. Because it sits right in town, it is a convenient place to cool off after exploring the shops and heritage buildings of Walton Street.

The beach is a modest stretch of sand with a gently shelving bottom, which makes it suitable for wading and for children building sandcastles. Behind the sand there is grass for spreading out blankets, and a playground nearby keeps younger children occupied. The Waterfront Trail runs past, so it is easy to arrive on foot or by bicycle from other parts of town, and the trail continues along the lakeshore for walkers who want a longer outing. From the water’s edge, the view stretches across Lake Ontario toward the horizon, and on a clear day it is pleasantly open.

The beach is public and open every day, but it is not supervised by lifeguards. Parents should watch children closely at all times, and swimmers should be careful, as conditions on the lake can change quickly, with wind, waves and cold water. Public washrooms in the marina building are available in the warmer months, usually from late spring into autumn. Beaches on Lake Ontario are tested for water quality during the season, and a beach may be posted as unsafe for swimming at times, so check local health notices if you plan to swim. Therefore it is worth checking conditions before going.

Visitors will find the beach part of a bigger outing. The harbour and marina, with boats moored at the docks, are next to it, and the mouth of the Ganaraska River is close. The Ganaraska River Trail and the main street of Port Hope are a short walk away, and the Port Hope Art Gallery and the library are not far. Cafes and ice cream shops in the downtown make good stops before or after a swim.

East Beach suits families, walkers and people who like a quiet lakefront rather than a large resort beach. Entry is free. Visit on a calm summer afternoon for swimming and sunbathing, or in the evening for a gentle walk and a view of the sunset over the lake, and bring sun protection, water and a towel.
