Point Pleasant Park

Point Pleasant Park, located at the southern tip of the Halifax peninsula, is a historic 75-hectare wooded area that serves as a significant natural and cultural landmark. Traditionally known as Amntu'kati to the Mi'kmaq people, the site later became a critical British defensive location, featuring numerous fortifications and batteries that guarded the harbor entrance. Since 1873, the City of Halifax has leased the park from the federal government for one shilling per year, a tradition symbolized by an annual ceremony in the 1960s.

Visitors can explore 39 kilometers of easy, winding gravel trails, many of which are wheelchair accessible. The park preserves early military structures, including a Martello Tower, offering a glimpse into its strategic past. Black Rock Beach provides a spot for unsupervised swimming, while the grounds serve as an off-leash dog park, with restrictions on Sailors Memorial Way after 10:00 AM and in parking lots. Cycling is permitted on main roads during the week and on designated weekend routes, while wooded footpaths are restricted to cyclists only on weekends and holidays.

The park is open daily from 6:00 AM to midnight, subject to winter maintenance. Amenities include parking, picnic tables, and washroom facilities. It is also a venue for cultural events, such as the "Shakespeare by the Sea" performances, and can be booked for weddings. Located at 5530 Point Pleasant Drive, the park offers a blend of natural beauty, historical significance, and recreational opportunities for residents and tourists alike.
