The Musée acadien du Québec is the museum of Acadian history and culture in Bonaventure, a town on the Baie des Chaleurs on the south coast of the Gaspé Peninsula. Bonaventure is one of the places where Acadian families settled after the deportation of the 1750s, when the British forced thousands of Acadians out of their homes in what is now the Maritime provinces. Some fled to the Gaspésie, where they built a new life along the shore, and their descendants still form a large part of the population. The museum tells their story and keeps their traditions alive.
The permanent exhibition, Une Acadie Québécoise, is the centrepiece. It explores how Acadians arrived on the Gaspé coast, how they rebuilt their communities, how fishing, farming and forestry shaped their lives and how their language, music and faith were preserved. Artifacts, photographs, documents and reconstructed scenes illustrate daily life, from domestic tools and clothing to the boats and gear of the fishery, and the displays make clear how the community has managed to maintain a distinctive identity. The story begins before the deportation, in the Acadian settlements of the Bay of Fundy, and it continues up to the present day.
Temporary exhibitions complement the permanent display. They cover a range of themes, from art and craft to local industry and social history, and they change regularly, so there is usually something new to see on a return visit. Some touch on the log-driving tradition, which was a major source of work in the region’s rivers, and on the way communities have responded to environmental and economic change. The museum also runs educational programs, talks and community events, and it is a centre for research on local genealogy and heritage.
The museum has a gift shop with books, crafts and local products, which makes it a good place to find souvenirs connected with Acadian culture. A heritage chapel on the grounds can be rented for private events, giving the site a continuing role in community life. The setting beside the bay is pleasant, and the surrounding grounds have views over the water.
Bonaventure is a small town with other places to see. The Bioparc de la Gaspésie, with its native wildlife, is nearby, and the Bonaventure River, famous for salmon, flows through the area. Beaches, bicycle routes and seafood restaurants line the bay, and the Acadian flag, with its star, is flown in many places. Visitors should check ahead, as opening hours and admission change with the season, with discounts for students and free entry for young children. The museum suits families, history lovers and anyone interested in Acadian culture, and a visit takes an hour or two.
