Maligne Lake, situated about 48 kilometres by road southeast of the town of Jasper in Jasper National Park, Alberta, is a striking glacial lake renowned for its vivid azure waters and dramatic mountain backdrop. Nestled at an elevation of 1,670 meters, the lake stretches 22.5 kilometers long with a maximum depth of 97 meters. It is surrounded by the rugged peaks of Leah and Samson, while the Charlton-Unwin, Maligne, and Coronet glaciers feed its oligotrophic waters.

The lake’s most iconic feature is Spirit Island, a small islet that has become a symbol of the Canadian Rockies. Lying about 14 kilometres down the lake, it is reached by a guided boat cruise from the north shore or, for experienced paddlers, by a long canoe or kayak trip. Cruises run in the ice-free season, roughly late spring to early autumn, and are usually booked in advance. Road access and cruise operations have been affected by work following the 2024 Jasper wildfire, so check with Parks Canada and the cruise operator before planning a visit.

Beyond the boat tours, Maligne Lake serves as a hub for outdoor recreation. Hikers can access the popular 44-kilometer Skyline Trail, which begins near the lake, or explore day hikes to Opal and Bald Hills. In winter, the lake freezes and the area is used for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. While the lake has been a tourism focal point since the early 20th century, it remains a place of natural beauty and adventure. Planning ahead is essential to fully enjoy this gem of the Rockies.
