Lost Lake Park

Lost Lake Park is a forested recreation area on the edge of Whistler, British Columbia, about a short walk or ride from Whistler Village along the Valley Trail. The park lies on the traditional territory of the Líl̓wat7úl Nation and the Squamish Nation, and it is a popular escape from the busier parts of the resort. The lake itself is a small kettle lake, formed when a block of glacial ice melted and left a basin that filled with water. Its dark, calm surface is ringed by tall conifers.

In summer the lake is the centre of activity. Swimming docks on the shoreline give access to the water, which is clear and cool, and locals and visitors spend hot afternoons here. Picnic tables, barbecue stands, outdoor showers and accessible washrooms make it practical for a day out, and there is an off-leash beach for dogs. The park has a relaxed, community feel, with families, couples and groups of friends spread along the shore. Food trucks operate during the warmer months, and bike valet service has been offered at busy times. In late summer, young Western Toad migrations can mean that parts of the park are managed carefully so the animals can cross safely.

A network of trails of more than 25 kilometres winds through the woods around the lake. Walkers and trail runners use the shorter loops, and mountain bikers find routes of different difficulty, while a disc golf course draws players who want to play among trees. The paths are shaded and quiet, with the smell of cedar and the sound of birds, and it is easy to spend a morning wandering without seeing many people. Visitors who want a longer loop can connect to the Valley Trail and head toward the village.

The park works in winter as well. When snow falls, the trails become cross-country ski and snowshoe routes, and the frozen woods are very quiet. The site is generally open from dawn to dusk in the main seasons, though dates and hours vary, so check the local municipality’s information before going.

Lost Lake suits families, swimmers, dog owners and anyone looking for a break from lifts and crowds. Bring water, sun protection and insect repellent in summer, and sturdy shoes for the trails. Allow a half day if you want to swim and walk, and arrive early on hot weekends, when parking and the beaches fill up. During peak summer days, expect plenty of company.
