Lethbridge Art Gallery

A solid brick building in the Edwardian classical style, with a columned portico and tall windows, houses some of the most adventurous art in southern Alberta. The Southern Alberta Art Gallery, usually known as SAAG, occupies the former Carnegie Library in downtown Lethbridge, a building from the early 1920s that was once the city's public library. The gallery has been based in Lethbridge since 1976, and the conversion of the library into exhibition space gave the community a dignified home for contemporary art in a city better known for coal, railways and farmland.

The building is a good place to meet the Carnegie idea. Andrew Carnegie funded libraries across Canada in the early 20th century, and the Lethbridge building follows the usual pattern of a symmetrical front, a central entrance and generous windows to let daylight into the reading rooms. The gallery adapted this layout into three exhibition spaces of different size and character, so that a single visit can include a major solo show, a smaller group exhibition and a project space for newer or more experimental work. The old building's high ceilings and wood details give the rooms a feeling that is different from a purpose-built white cube.

The programme focuses on contemporary art. Exhibitions present the work of artists from southern Alberta and across Canada, alongside international names, and cover painting, sculpture, photography, video, installation and mixed media. Themes often connect to the region, such as land, identity, history and Indigenous perspectives, and the gallery works closely with the Blackfoot community and other local groups. The shows change several times a year, so repeat visits bring something new. Staff, including a director and curators, organise the exhibitions and talks.

For many people, education is central to the gallery's role. Workshops, tours, artist talks and family activities are held throughout the year, and school groups visit regularly. A gift shop sells art books, cards, prints and handmade objects by local craftspeople, a good place to find a souvenir that is not mass-produced.

The gallery is in the downtown core, a short walk from Galt Gardens, the shops of 5th Street South and the visitor attractions of the city.
