Cape St. Mary’s Ecological Reserve, located approximately 200 kilometers southwest of St. John’s, offers a dramatic coastal experience. The reserve features rugged cliffs that drop sharply into the Atlantic Ocean, creating a striking backdrop for visitors. This area hosts one of the world’s most accessible seabird colonies, where tens of thousands of birds, including northern gannets, thick-billed murres, and kittiwakes, nest during the breeding season.
Visitors can explore the landscape via a 1.4-kilometer trail that leads to cliff-top viewing areas. The walk takes approximately 20 to 30 minutes and provides a unique opportunity to observe birds in their natural habitat. From the viewing platforms, guests can watch the birds’ nesting, courtship, and feeding behaviors up close. The trail is accessible, though the terrain is rugged, so sturdy footwear is recommended.
The site also features an interpretive center, which is accessible to visitors with mobility challenges. Inside, visitors can learn about local wildlife and the ecological significance of the area. The center includes a large viewing window that offers a different perspective on the seabirds. The region is known for its changeable weather, so visitors should prepare for wind, fog, and rain. The reserve provides a unique opportunity to connect with nature and witness the vibrant life of the Atlantic coast.
