Bow Valley Parkway

The Bow Valley Parkway, also known as Highway 1A, is a scenic route connecting Banff to Lake Louise. Built in 1920, this 48-kilometer road offers a slower, more immersive experience compared to the busy Trans-Canada Highway. The route runs parallel to the Bow River, providing lush forest views and numerous pull-out points for hiking and wildlife viewing.

The parkway is open year-round, but seasonal restrictions apply to ensure safety and protect wildlife. A key feature is the cycling pilot program, which restricts vehicle access to the eastern 17-kilometer section during specific times, allowing cyclists safe passage. Additionally, there are specific seasonal restrictions on travel times; for example, from March 1 to June 25, travel is prohibited between 8:00 PM and 8:00 AM in the eastern section to protect wildlife habitat.

Visitors should be aware that the area is a habitat for various animals, including black bears, and should exercise caution. The road is well-maintained, but drivers should adhere to the 60 km/h speed limit and be alert for wildlife. The parkway offers a peaceful alternative to the main highway, allowing travelers to enjoy the natural beauty of the Canadian Rockies at a leisurely pace. It is recommended to check for any current road closures or restrictions before traveling.
