Smiths Falls Museum

The Smiths Falls Heritage House Museum is the local history museum of Smiths Falls, Ontario, a town on the Rideau Canal about an hour southwest of Ottawa. It is set beside the Old Slys Locks, one of the older stretches of the canal, in a mid-nineteenth-century house that has been preserved and opened to the public. The building and its canalside setting are part of the story it tells, and the visit combines a look at domestic life of the period with an overview of how the town grew up around the waterway.

The land here is part of the traditional territory of the Algonquin people, who travelled and traded along the Rideau and Ottawa river systems long before the canal was built. The museum recognises that history alongside the later stories of Loyalist settlers, Irish and Scottish labourers who dug the canal in the 1820s and 1830s, and the families who established mills, shops and farms along the river. Smiths Falls developed at a natural drop in the Rideau River, where the water could power mills and where the canal needed a set of locks to climb the elevation. In the later nineteenth century, the arrival of the railway added another layer of industry, and the town became a railway centre.

Inside, exhibits are arranged to show the rooms of a Victorian home and to display artefacts, photographs and documents drawn from the community’s collection. Objects of everyday life, such as tools, clothing, kitchen equipment and furniture, help to bring the period alive, and rotating displays focus on particular themes or events in local history. The museum also offers genealogy support, and staff and volunteers can help visitors research family histories connected with the Smiths Falls area, using local records and archives. Community programs, talks and seasonal events take place through the year.

The setting adds to the visit. The Old Slys Locks are just outside, and in the boating season it is possible to watch vessels pass through by hand-operated gates, which gives a clear picture of how the canal works. The Rideau Canal Heritage Trail follows the waterway, and a short walk leads to other lock sites and to the town centre. The nearby Lock 14 Interpretive Centre and the town’s railway heritage fill out a day of exploring.

Visitors should check opening days and hours before going, since the museum runs on a seasonal schedule and may close on certain holidays. Parking is available nearby, and the museum is accessible by car or on foot from the town. It suits families, history fans, canal enthusiasts and anyone tracing their roots in eastern Ontario. A visit takes an hour or so.
