Sentier des Sommets (Summit Trail)

The Sentier des Sommets, also presented under the name Sentier des Cimes, is a forest trail in the Laurentian Mountains of Quebec that is built around a raised walkway among the treetops. The name Cimes means treetops in French, and the idea is to lift visitors above the forest floor so that they can see the woods from a different angle. It is a popular outing for families and nature lovers in the Laurentians, in the hills north of Montreal and in the same general region as the resort town of Mont-Tremblant, though it is a separate attraction from the ski resort.

The central feature is an elevated wooden walkway that climbs gently through the forest on stilts and bridges. Walking on it, you pass at eye level with the branches of maples, birches and other broadleaf trees, and the view opens out over the hills and valleys of the Canadian Shield. A tall wooden tower at the high point lets visitors climb above the canopy for a wide view across the forest, and in autumn the colours spread out below like a carpet of red, orange and gold. The slope is kept gentle, and railings and ramps make the route accessible to people of different ages and abilities, including those with strollers.

The trail doubles as an outdoor classroom. Information panels along the way explain how a northern hardwood forest works, from the canopy insects and birds that live far above ground to the trees’ roots and soil fungi below. Sugar maples and yellow birch are the main species, and the displays show how the forest adapts to the seasons. Quiet visitors may see squirrels, chipmunks and a variety of birds, and the sound of the wind in the leaves adds to the atmosphere.

Practical points matter. The walkway is open seasonally, typically from late spring through autumn, and there is an entry fee, so check the operator’s website for dates and ticket rules, since advance booking may be required at busy times. Children should be accompanied by an adult, and visitors should wear comfortable shoes and bring water and insect repellent in summer. A walk takes around an hour or two, depending on how often you stop.

The trail suits families, photographers and anyone who wants an easy, scenic walk in the forest without a steep climb. Autumn is especially popular for the colours, so arrive early on weekends. It combines naturally with other Laurentian activities, including lake visits, cycling and meals in the nearby villages.
