Downtown Magog

Downtown Magog is the lively centre of a lakeside town in the Estrie region of Quebec, at the northern end of Lake Memphremagog, about an hour and a half from Montreal. The town grew up where the Magog River leaves the lake and drops through a gorge, a place that gave power to mills and later to textile factories, and the old industrial streets are now filled with shops, restaurants and galleries. The compact core, centred on rue Principale, is easy to explore on foot, and the lake is only a few minutes away.

Rue Principale is the main thoroughfare, lined with a mix of brick buildings from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries and more recent ones. Independent boutiques, craft shops, cafes, bakeries and bistros fill the ground floors, and terraces spill onto the sidewalks in summer. The district has a strong local flavour, with products from the Eastern Townships, including cheeses, ciders, maple products and wines, on sale in many shops. Murals and public art decorate side streets, and the heritage landmark known as the Vieux Clocher stands among the downtown buildings.

The setting by the lake adds to the pleasure. A waterfront park with a beach, walking and cycling paths, a marina and boat cruises lies at the foot of the town, and from there the view stretches across the long, narrow lake toward the hills. The Magog gorge, with its trails, bridges and viewpoints over the rapids, is a short walk from the centre. In summer, visitors swim, paddle and cycle, while in winter, skating, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing take over, and the nearby Mont Orford offers downhill skiing and hiking.

Events fill the calendar. The most famous is the Fête des vendanges Magog-Orford, a grape harvest festival held in the early autumn, when the region’s vineyards, orchards and restaurants show off their produce, with tastings, markets and music. Summer brings street festivals, concerts and fireworks, and a regular First Friday gathering draws residents and visitors downtown. Many shops adjust their hours for these occasions, so it is worth checking times in advance.

For food, the town has a reputation for good restaurants, many of them using local ingredients, and visitors can sample regional wines and ciders at tasting rooms. Visitors will find parking along the streets and in lots near the lake, and the town is easy to walk once you arrive. Downtown Magog suits couples, families and day-trippers who want a mix of shopping, dining and lakeside leisure. Allow a few hours for the streets, more if you add a cruise or a walk in the gorge.
